Seattle, Building No. 113, was built in 1966 at a cost of $125,175 as a vocational building where young men can learn to apply their skills in interior and exterior painting. The building was named for Chief Seattle (Indian spelling Seathl), who was born about 1785 in the neighborhood of the city that now bears his name. Seattle was the chief of the Duamish, Suquamish, and allied tribes. He was first signer of the Port Elliot Treaty (1855) in which the Puget Sound Indians agreed to accept reservation life. He always maintained a friendly attitude toward the whites and when he became Christianized, he inaugurated morning and evening prayers among his people. This custom continued until his death in 1866. He was unwilling to have the city named after him as local Indian belief held that after his death his spirit could be troubled each time human lips spoke the name. In his old age, he asked for gifts from the Seattle citizens as a kind of tax to recognize him in advance for this oft-broken sleep of eternity. #American #building #component #education #geography #gis #Haskell #hinu #history #Indian #Kansas #ku #landmark #Lawrence #model #nation #native #school #seattle #sketchup #university
