By the 3nd century B.C. Rome had entered the infancy of its Republican era and the classic Roman legionary was feeling his birth pangs. The earlier Roman military formation based on the Greek phalanx had been abandoned and the standard Roman square was now in use. The previous long spear and round shield were gone, replaced by the large oval (later square) scutum and the deadly pila and pilum. The Roman army at this time continued to use their short cut and thrust swords of either straignt blade designs, or designs based on earller leaf shaped bladess, such as the Greek Xiphos. This model depicts one of these leaf blade designs based on earlier Greek Xiphos type swords, with a blade length of 22 in. #ancient_weapons #arms #army #cut #empire #gladias #Gladias_Hispaniensis #Gladius #Hispaniensis #Legion #legionary #military #Roman #Roman_Army #roman_empire #Rome #short_sword #soldier #stab #Sword #thrust #war #warrior #weapon
