This model represents the laminated iron plate cuirass armor used by Roman legionary soldiers between 9 BC and the 3rd century AD. The armour itself consisted of broad ferrous (iron) strips ('girth hoops') fastened to internal leather straps. The strips were arranged horizontally on the body, overlapping downwards, and they surrounded the torso in two halves, being fastened at the front and back. The upper body and shoulders were protected by additional strips ('shoulder guards') and breast- and backplates. The form of the armour allowed it to be stored very compactly, since it was possible to separate it into four sections. The fitments that closed the various plate sections together (buckles, lobate hinges, hinged straps, tie-hooks, tie-rings, etc.) were, however, made of brass (copper-zinc alloy, with a composition of approximately 75% Cu: 25% Zn). There were three basic types (Kalkriese, Corbridge, and Newstead) and one related form (Alba Iulia) with each type being an evolutionary development over the previous type, although there was considerable overlap in the use of the different types of armor during the same periods. Each cuirass was made up of four sections: two for the shoulders and two for either side of the torso. This model depicts the type known as Corbridge Type 'B' (developed circa AD 25) and was a simplified version of the type 'A' utilizing simpler fastenings and one less plate at the bottom of the torso section. #ancient_weapons #Armor #arms #army #Corbridge #curass #empire #Legion #legionary #Legionary_armor #lorica #lorica_segmentata #military #plate_armor #Roman #Roman_Army #roman_empire #Rome #soldier #war #warrior #weapon
