A nice tool to get a mirror fish on turned parts; especially helpful with metals that do not leave good turned finish. The tool body is made out of heat treated D2 steel with an integral loop to provide an adjustable force. The geometry of the tool was modelled to determine a shape that will give a force of 0.6N (2.2 oz force) for each micron (0.00004") of deflection for a maximum used force of 500N. This made it easy to calibrate the metric dial indicator to read directly in Newtons (with a printed scale glued on top of the original). Consistent force is important to get a good finish.
The roller is a carbon steel ball bearing with rounded and polished race face. Carbide will be better.
Indicator model based on Mitutoyo 2358-50 model by Nick Ferra. Thank you, Nick.
