Problem Statement: Because of the novel Corona Virus (that causes COVID – 19), a mass of patients suffers from respiratory problems, and consequently they must be intubated. This resulted in a high demand for respiratory devices around the world. A mechanical ventilator is meant to force air into a patient via a tube which passes into the trachea and has an inflatable cuff which sits below the vocal cords creating a seal(source : https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/tracheostomy/living/speech.html)
ROAERA is meant to be a be a low resource 3D printable device that can substitute professional medical ventilators for mild cases of pneumonia. ROAERA concept was designed by using a novel compact principle, using a pulley as a main feature for the angular displacement motion. The tube is placed between the two parts that form a claw-based design which can grasp and compress the tube with the aid of a motor. The stepper motor together with the microcontroller and power source are placed on top. When activated the motor pulley rotates, wrapping the cable around the pulley which creates pulling motion which further results in an angular motion in the system that compresses the air tube. For the negative pressure, the stepper motor releases the cable, therefore unwrapping the cable, making the upper to return to the initial position. From the controller the cycles can be adapted to the need of the patient.
This model was made to be a concept which would further attention can be better optimised in order to be manufacturable. Better placement and calculation of the displacements is necessary, including also center of masses and balancing torques. Another option would be to place the motor at the bottom in order to be directly connected to the upper part therefore lowering the number of components from the whole assembly. I wish that we can further develop this project if it receives the right interest from engineers and investors.
