What if: the result of reverse engineering is needed quickly, and the scanned part looks not easy to convert a solid model?
Use auto-surface (software Geomagic Design X , Rhino (T-Splines plug-in), Autodesk inventor (MeshEnabler plug-in) and many others).
Will it be faster: usually yes, much faster than manually recreating the part. But customers for some reason do not like these "patchwork surfaces." I've done these surfaces many times, but no customer has agreed to use them :-) This is strange, since the accuracy of the
"patchwork surfaces" is quite sufficient (see the file Daily_report.pdf).
Preprocessing the scanned mesh:
1, Repair the mesh, fill the holes.
2. Important: Adaptive optimization (depending on the curvature) of the mesh is needed. The auto-surface does not correspond well to the too dense and too loose mesh. How to guess? Only by looking through the options (see the file Daily_report.pdf).
I attach the source file (STL*) and variant of the auto-surface. Try it. Good luck!
