The Red October was a fictional modified Soviet Typhoon nuclear-powered submarine that appeared in the 1990 American film The Hunt for Red October. At 649 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 39.4 feet tall, the Red October was 75 feet longer and 10 feet wider than the standard Typhoon submarine, with 30 R-39 (NATO SS-N-20) multi-warhead intercontinental ballistic missiles, ten more than the standard Typhoon. Equipped with the same nuclear reactor powerplant as a standard Typhoon, the Red October was also fitted with a new silent Magneto hydrodynamic propulsion system, known as a caterpillar drive, designed to render it invisible to other submarines. This model depicts the film accurate Red October, based on movie screen captures and data from the original film shooting models. Scene tabs provide model details, with the last two tabs showing both normal submerged operation, and a second sub in caterpillar mode, with open bow and stern doors and required pitch change in the propellers blades.
