19" Rack Mount Brackets
(or 10" or any distance you want)
These brackets are useful, if you want to mount a lightweight piece of equipment like a network switch or a small patch-panel to a wood shelf or the underside of a desk.
The main file is written for OpenSCAD and can be customized. You can vary the thickness of the bracket walls or the size of the screw holes and then generate the STL files for any number of height-units you need. The model is designed to conserve material, where feasible, while staying as rigid and modular as possible.
I've included the STL files for 1-4U with the default parameters - as I have them in use personally for mounting computer network hardware and power supplies.
The screws I use for the equipment are off-the-shelf M5x16mm, a washer and a corresponding nut on the back. The brackets are screwed to a wood shelf using ordinary wood screws and a washer - all from the local hardware store.
Any suggestions and improvements are welcome and I will try to keep the model updated, if necessary.
Update 2020-01-07: I've now included a variation on the holes in the side wall. It should now be possible to accommodate a rack-mount power strip with the cable exiting from the side. The code is commented out in the updated .scad file, and I've included an STL file for a 3U model. The idea is to clip a hole in the diagonal strut to insert the cable via the slit, and then use cable ties through the provided holes to add back stability, once the cable is in place.
