Back in October 1943, the company 'Frederic Krupp' has taken the initiative to establish a strengthened chassis PzKpfw 38 (t) rotating tower with a 75-mm gun KwK 40 L/43, but the proposal was rejected because of the need for major new housing and production of a new tower. However, in early 1944, already with the company 'TIM' project was finished installing standard turret PzKpfw IV with the KwK 40 L/48 gun on the chassis approved for mass production of a new tank destroyer «Hetzer». The project has been approved, but the engine power was not enough to implement the tank. To facilitate and simplify the tank design Germans remembered experience of the USSR, and the tower lost its commander's turret and side doors.
