The Clan of the Cave Wolves



Ooga's parents live in a small cave dwelling community overlooking forests on one side and a fertile grass plane on the other. Life here was good and bountiful. But one dry summer lead to another, then another, and another. The streams and river dried up. The rains did not come. The lush forest and plain withered - forcing the small band of cave dwellers to seek new habitations elsewhere. Ooga was but a small child at the time, of perhaps no more than three or four summers. The journey proved to be a long and treacherous one. Many of their clan died along the way - just crossing the mountains. More perished and fell prey as they reach the foothills and were set upon by hostile marauding bands of hunter-gathers who dwelt in the nearby plains. The men of their clan forced, for the first time ever, to fight and be killed in battle as old and young scattered and fled. Many of their women carried off. Some to be rescued. Some never to be seen again. Those of their clan who escaped back into the rocky foothills eventually found safety and shelter among the strange clan of cave dwellers further to the north. The land, here, was rich and fertile, abounding with life, and life giving resources. But more harsh and deadly than the land from which they had come. In order to survive, the clan of cave dwellers, who taken them in, had learned to emulate and become as strong and fierce as the wild cave-wolves they live among in those rocky crags. They were greatly feared and left alone by the neighboring, war-like clans, who held them in awe, for they alone seemed able to befriend and tame those wild and frightening beasts whose howling in the night made their blood run cold. Thus, Ooga grew up part of this strange clan who had taken to living with the wild cave-wolves and from an early age she had learned to run and play and grow wise and fierce with a young wolf-pup, called, Shaitan. The two becoming fast friends for life, and together had many adventures. But that is another story.
