Long before there were pot heads there were head pots. This is an ancient native american pot shaped like a human head with a tattooed face. This model is based on a scan available from http://hampson.cast.uark.edu/ . The Arkansas museum has scanned their large collection of prehistoric native american pottery and made the scans available for download.
The scans are beautifully detailed, but unfortunately in their raw form they aren't printable. The scanner can only capture the outside of the vessel and so it provides only a non-manifold surface which can't usually be printed.
I brought the original scan into 3Dcoat, solidified the model and carved out the inside using the voxel editor. So anyone using this model for scholarly study must remember that while the outside is based on the scan the inside is entirely my own work and is no reflection of the actual artifact.
We talked about this thing and a whole lot more about 3d printing on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, Stitcher radio or direct from the source at http://threedprintingtoday.libsyn.com/
