Pontiac, Building No. 50, was built in 1934 at a cost of $51,300 as a vocational and trades building. Currently it houses the offices of the school’s vice president and the director of research and evaluation, as well as quarters for welding, wrestling, security, art, and weaving. Pontiac was born in Ohio in the 1700’s; his father was a great Ottawa chief and his mother a Chippewa Indian. Not much is known of his early life. He was a great chief, who united three tribes- the Chippewa, Potawatomi, and Ottawa – into what was known as the “Confederacy of Pontiac.” He allied with the French who were generous to Pontiac’s band. The Confederacy sought to drive out the English from Detroit. After unsuccessfully fighting the English for three years, Pontiac entered a formal peace treaty in 1765 in Detroit after he heard the French had been defeated in Canada. He was admired and respected by the English; this situation caused jealousy among the other tribes. Pontiac was murdered in 1769 at Cahokia, Illinois, by a Kaskaskia Indian who was bribed by a whiteman. #American #building #component #education #geography #gis #Haskell #hinu #history #Indian #Kansas #ku #landmark #Lawrence #model #nation #native #pontiac #school #sketchup #university
