I wanted to test how feasible a DIY cheap y-carriage with parts one could easily find would be. Results: It's surprisingly good, the only down side is that it requires work assembling it, maybe a drill if the holes are too small.
There is no belt anchor, you just secure the belts with zip-ties around the X rods. You can then use 1 zip-tie on the left side of the zip-tied belt to secure both X rods, and another on the right side. This creates tension in the rods and removes their flexibility.
The parts were printed at 20% infill with 3 perimeters and 4 top/bottom solid layers.
BOM:
40x M5 hex nuts
4x 230mm M5 threaded rod (Y direction)
2x 140mm M5 threaded rod (X direction)
