Pills can be too large for people to swallow and many consumers have difficulty crushing these pills to make it easier for them to take. Currently available solutions often waste medication in the process of transferring the crushed medicine from a mortar to the syringe. Team Pill Crush prototyped a portable medicine grinder that also functions as a syringe using a MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer. The final device will be made of nonstick materials and include tools to round up any remaining medication.
2ndA is a modified plunger that fits inside a syringe. The plunger has two slots around the circumference for rubber seals to be placed, and a mortar-like area on the top for crushing pills inside. This design lets the user ensure no medicine is stuck to the sides of the mortar before inserting the plunger into the syringe.
2ndB is the pestle used to crush pills inside the plunger.
grinder - Body1-1 is a dual pestle and plunger. One end is used to crush the pills, and the other end is used to plunge the powder (after water, etc. is added) through the syringe and into the g-tube.
grinder - Body3-1 is a dual mortar and syringe.
grinder - Body2-1 is a stand/mating part for the dual mortar and syringe. The syringe is placed onto the stand to create a fully sealed (at the bottom) mortar. At that point, the medicine may be crushed with the pestle. After the crushing, the medicine may be mixed with water or formula, and the syringe may then be air-sealed with the plunger. Once air-sealed, the syringe may be turned upside down and the stand may be removed to reveal the syringe opening.
grinder - Body7-1 is simple rubber seal for the plunger.
