Print settings is !VERY! important
Print 6-8% infill !!!! Solid plastic does NOT float!
The lower you can print infill the better
2.0 mm shell/walls as any thinner and it will not be water tight.
^-- at least 5 shells (.4 x 5=2.0mm or .8 x 3 =2.4mm)
I did print with both .4 mm and .8 mm nozzles and both worked fine.
the .4 mm version looks better, the .8 version takes 1/4 the time to print.
PLA only lasts about solid 4 months before you will need another one. Mine is still ok but the did soften and shows bleaching to where you can rub it apart in the inner compartment and the bottom where you drilled the holes.
Recommend PETG.
Even though the water is always 105F or less in a spa. Unless your making cream of brain soup! PLA does get slowly degrade with heated chlorine.
3" pool tablets are much cheaper than the 1" tablets that are sold for spa use.
50 lbs can cost about $143 vs $99-111 for the same weight of 3" tablets and after my tests, the 3" even seem to last longer.
I did a h311 of a lot of work on this floater, Being that a 3" tablet is made for 5000 gallons of water and my Fourwinds hot tub at 94" x 94" is only 550 gallons. Ya it's big a one :p I even had to put a garage door in my basement to get the tub in the house.
Start out with one hole drilled at first. After 2 weeks if you don't get enough chlorine in the water, move for a 2nd hole. Keep the holes in the corners so that the tablet does not block it. I didn't get gunk clogging the holes like I expected. remember the tablets have stabilizer in them. This is added to the water so that the chlorine does not evaporate too fast. Both sun and heated water make chlorine evaporate faster.
Notes: Researching prices for the best deal on tablets lead me to see many complaints of faster dissolving tablets (crap quality) or arrival as power or all broken tablets.
I found the best deal (even including MANY internet searches) as being Sams club as I could walk up open the container and check for broken tablets and take them home right then. Sams sell a 40lb bucket for like $81-84 which adjusted for 50lbs pricing makes it about $111/50 lbs and none of the tablets are broken.
I put one tablet in, went on a 9 day vacation, came back to a sparkling clean hottub with still 15-20mm of tablet still left!!! This thing works better than I designed for. Over time I see that I'm getting about 2 1/2 weeks on each tablet with 2 holes drilled.
