I designed a desktop organizer in the shape of a pelican to try and add some comic relief in these trying times. The pouch can hold pencils and pens while the feet has space for miscellaneous items such as paperclips or erasers. The tail portion is a 4” diameter circle meant to be a cup coaster and the hole in body should fit business cards. The pelican also sports a teardrop from the surprise of someone using its tail as a cup coaster. The total height is 6.25” and the length is about 9”.
The biggest issue was the balance between form and function. Trying to make the design look more pelican like removed functionality. The body proportions are extremely exaggerated to so that they can be useful. The feet are merged, the pouch is quite large and the tail portion extends much further than what a pelican would look like.
If redesigning this I would maybe redefine some angles to aid in printing. There are some unsupported overhangs and a bridge that are going to require support. I have not 3D printed a piece before and am unsure how troublesome these areas will be.
3D printing (3DP) enables the part to be made all in one piece. While other methods could also produce the piece without the need for fasteners, 3DP would save us the trouble of trying to machine the hard to reach places such as the feet area.
