Swing bridge over Gloucester/Sharpness Canal. Iron structure with bitumen finish roadway surface. The opening section of the bridge is supported on a pivot-point mechanism that incorporates rotating gear components. The bridge opens in a clockwise direction from the control room side of the canal. The counter-balanced end runs on a quadrant iron track, while the cantilevered end swings back over the canal.. The bridge has white painted timber railings. Built in 1865 to replace an earlier timber bridge. Originally hand-cranked operation.. Motorized in 1990. Bridgekeeper's control room in flat-roofed brick-walled kiosk. Attached steel sorage lock-up lean-to painted blue . Sundry electrical motor and mechanicals cabnrets; traffic lights; and automated drop-down gates. The bridge has also been known as 'Castle Bridge' after a long since demolished canal-side inn. #bridge
