Problem Statement:
My project is a 3-D printed attachment to a Chromebook, which holds papers at eye level to better allow someone to copy down written information or even summaries articles. When in virtual learning I had to often print articles and summarize or do some type of response on my Chromebook of the article. While I was doing this I had to constantly look down at my paper and look back up continuously, which caused me to lose my train of thought and caused some neck pain at times. This attachment would remove the constant up and down motion while writing and improve the efficiency in daily work. Furthermore, 3-D printing this add-on would allow me to customize the size to best fit a Chromebook and make it more durable too. This design would ultimately help others with a similar or same issue and myself. In conclusion, my project is a 3-D printed attachment to a Chromebook, which holds papers at the eye level for any student.
What issues did you come up against?
Issues I came up against were finding correct dimensions and keeping the overall size of the attachment on the small side. I would like the project to be small and adaptable, but the larger it gets the harder that is. With all the little components though, it’s size correlates with the number of tasks it completes. The attachment which was originally made for one purpose can now serve many.
If you could redesign this again what would you change?
I would try and see if there are other geometrical shapes that could be used to better fit the model. Maybe instead of using triangles and rectangles, I could look for more complex shapes and sizes to fit the purpose and position of the attachment. Also, I would do several drafts where I would 3-D print the project, access, and then make improvements until I know it’s the best it can be. More time would allow more room for revising and fixing when needed as well.
How would 3D printing help strengthen your design?
3-D printing makes my design more durable, cheap, and accessible. If a 3-D printer is available this design is easily printable and can make a large difference. Not only that but using a 3-D printer would reduce the cost of the attachment rather than using other materials, due to its size and shape. Lastly, the plastics used in 3-D printing are less likely to break or fracture over other common materials.
