This is to allow changing the diameter of an orifice in a union without having to fight with gaskets and removing all the bolts that hold the union flange together. There are two fixed orifice sizes that frequently need to be changed back and forth between.

With this concept, just loosen all the bolts remove the two to allow the tab to pass, and then reinstall and tighten all the bolts. when the tabs are flush with each other in one position the orifice will be the smaller diameter, and when they are flush in the other position the orifice will be the larger opening.
