History: The basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-fin-des-Terres in Soulac-sur-mer near the atlantic coast was threatened by sand dunes since its construction in the 12th century. Documents from the 12th and 13th century describe the advancing sanding-up: The church floor was raised by a couple of meters, the main entrance was moved from the south to the west side. Eventually, the choir and the entire first floor had to be abandoned. The church was completely relinquish to the sand in 1741. Until the middle of the 19th century, the dune had moved on and uncovered the church. During the following decades, the building was restored fundamentally. Design: The almost 50 meter long construction corresponds to the general plan of Benedictine building of churches. It consists of a nave with to aisles. Presumably, the church tower at the north-western corner was built at a later point of time. It is assumed, that the preceding central tower was positioned at the eastern end of the nave. #Atlantic #Atlantik #Atlantique #Beach #Benedictine #Bordeaux #Camino_de_Santiago #Church #Dune #eglise #Euronat #France #Frankreich #Gironde #iglesia #Jakobsweg #Kirche #LAmelie #Medoc #Montalivet #Notre_Dame #Nuestra_Señora_de_Finisterre #Ocean #Ozean #Pointe_Grave #Soulac #SoulacsurMer #Stone #Way_of_St_James
