Since I have a full set of US Virtual boy games and manuals, I wanted to come up with a clean solution to store all my games.
I saw a long time ago a project someone have done using Nintendo DS cases that were modified with foam inserts to fit their Virtual boy cartridges. I tried to do the same, however without a laser CNC cutter its impossible to achieve a perfect finish. So I decided instead to keep a piece of foam behind and create a 3D printed insert to glue over. It fits the original cartridges perfectly and provide some protection as well (foam).
I also added a piece of foam under the manual to have a clean look and use plastic sleeve over all my manual to ensure the tab holding the manual doesnt damage them or leave a mark. This also make the content thicker and prevent movement of the cartridge inside. The cases close pretty tight.
The cases have to be modified and a few ridges need to be cut. I did that using a pair of small cutters, a construction knife and a dremel with a cut off wheel to remove the area where the DS cartridge usually is being held. I then used glue under the foam and glued the 3D printed insert on top of it. Took a few hours to do my full set but very happy with the results.
The artwork for the sleeves was originally designed by a few contributors from the website I found many years ago. However I went through all of them and cleaned them up. Also made sure all the size was perfect to fit the case and the style was consistent across the cases. I upload the PSD template and all the TIF images from the US set here:https://www.dropbox.com/s/in2wnhtf2tszo93/cover_artwork.zip?dl=0
Enjoy and share your results!
