Here is some of my EDC spinning top collection.
There really hasn't been much in the way of spinning tops on thingiverse so I decided to put some of my designs up for others to enjoy.
I print mainly with PLA, but ABS and PET work as well.
Spin times range from about 1.5 minutes to just under 4 minutes.
The smallest is .95" diameter and the largest is 2" diameter.
There are versions with .25" (1/4") diameter balls for the pivot point and also .1875" (3/16").
The .95" diameter top has a .1875" shpere.
There are six versions of the 1.25" diameter top, one with a single nickel inserted, one without, one with 6 ball bearings, one with .25" diameter sphere, one with .25" diameter sphereand nickel and one as a single piece with a pocket for a nickel (must be inserted during the print and print with supports).
I also include my 2" slotted top design with a .25" diameter sphere for the pivot.
Then there is my top I call the Turbine. This was a request from a friend. It uses a .1875" diameter sphere.
All two piece designs are glued together using CA or 2 part epoxy. Use either a drill bit through the top as a guide or use .047"-.050" pins (drill bits) around the perimeter to accurately locate the two halves. You can remove the pins after the glue sets. You can drill out the holes if you need different size pins.
The spheres are just pressed in.
Use stainless steel, or ceramic spheres.
I prefer to use Silicon Nitride spheres from EBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/291578943916?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
And stainless for the ¼” http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-1-4-Inch-G25-Precision-420-Stainless-Steel-Bearing-Balls-/301017856853
Part dimensions are in inches
Print Settings:
Layer height: .2mm
Shells: 2
Nozzle: .4mm
Infill: 100%
Infill overlap: 15%
Support (where needed): 25% grid (support needed when printing tops with nickels)
