Munich International Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM), officially named Franz Josef Strauss International Airport (German: Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauß) is located 17.5 miles (28km) northeast of Munich, Germany, and is a hub for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partner airlines. In 2006 the airport had 30.76 million passengers, making it the second most important airport in Germany and currently ranked 7th in Europe. In 2006, for the second consecutive year, Munich Airport was named the 'Best Airport in Europe' and third best worldwide (after Singapore Changi Airport and Hong Kong International Airport) by Skytrax, the air transport research company. It began operations in 1992, replacing the former international Airport in Munich-Riem. When its construction was started in 1980 a village named Franzheim had to be demolished, its 500 inhabitants having been resettled in other places in the area. As Lufthansa's home base at Frankfurt International Airport is heavily saturated with traffic and has capacity limits, cities with large frequencies are served through Munich Franz Josef Strauss airport as well as Frankfurt International. Terminal 1 is a passenger and aircraft handling facility. In addition, it contains general supply equipment, services, shops and restaurants. #EDDM #Flughafen_München #Flughafen_München_II #MUC #munich_airport #münchner_Flughafen
