Mini laser cutter/engraver created from parts salvaged from CD-ROM drives, a DVD-Rom burner and a 3.5" floppy drive. It was inspired by this Pocket laser engraver by Groover. If you want to build one read his Instructable for details.
It is powered by a Arduino Pro Mini running GRBL an open source g-code-parser and CNC milling controller. The CD-ROM drive stepper motors are driven by Easy Driver Stepper Motor Drivers. The laser is a 650nm 400mW red laser diode from a DVD-Burner in a Aixiz module driven by a Constant current laser driver. It has enough power to cut craft foam and colored paper (sticky notes) and will engrave wood.
I've included the OpenSCAD source for the frame, print bed and mounts since you will probably have to modify them to fit the parts you have. It was printed with a Printrbot Simple Metal with heated bed.
The video is of the previous version of the laser cutter that had a wood frame that I could never quite get square and gave me the excuse to buy a 3d printer.
Updated Video of current version cutting a SVG out of a Post-It Note.
