This is a high school located on Merivale Road, on the corner of Veiwmount and Merivale. 1276 students attend the school. The Health and Phys. Ed. Department often uses the arena behind during the winter. The school along with Bell H.S. was built in 1964 as a composite project built under the provisions of the Vocational and Technical Education Act. Later that year (1964) the school recieved an addition of a 25 room center block (today's L wing) and library. Before that addition both Merivale and Bell High Schools were exactly identical. Lots of students are from the surrounding area, but most others are from Barrhaven, as Barrhaven has only one Public High School. As of 2005, the school had to intake the remaining students from both Laurentian High School and J.S. Woodsworth High School, which were both closed for enrolement reasons. This intake increased the population, along the faculty. Also, as of 2005, the school underwent major renovation to most of the science labs. In December 2005, a fire destroyed the main office, resulting in $100,000 worth of damage. The office has since been reconstructed. The school offers a large variety of different clubs and organizations, and has recieved many rewards in the arts, acedamics and athletics. The school is also the only one in the region with a steel drum program, headed by students. The school also produces drama productions, often winning Cappies awards. The school is served by bus routes 675, 642, 677, 687, and 688. #Canada #High_Schools_in_Ottawa
