Memorial for Peter Fechter

Peter Fechter died 17. August 1962, aged 18, when trying to escape from East Berlin. He was shot by border guards when he attempted to climb over Berlin Wall at Zimmerstraße near Checkpoint Charlie and then fell back to the Border Strip. Despite his screams for help he bleeded to death after an hour in front of hundreds of witnesses without medical help either from the eastern or the western side. This may because after several serious incidents with shootings at the border the weeks before the police and the allied millitary feared action or had orders to do nothing to prevent further escalation. In 1999 this Memorial replaced the wooden cross which was erected in West Berlin in front of the wall at the place he died. The red circular stone in the pavement marks the place of his death, the double cobblestone row the course of the wall.
