MARS Base One is made up of multiple modules, each one would designed to land separately on the surface of Mars using a rocket aided descent. Once on the surface the modules would be positioned autonomously by the Mobile Lab and would then be filled with a livable atmosphere.
The module in the left corner would be reserved for science purposes and the two modules under it are living space for the crew of up to eight people. The two modules with glass roofs are greenhouses for growing food and CO2 gas could be filtered through the plants and turned into oxygen for the astronauts. The module to the right of the greenhouses is the service bay which would contain the Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) suits are stored and the life support system is located. The service bay would also have multiple 3D printers to create replacement parts. The airlock, which is located on the far side of the service bay, is designed for two or three astronauts and can be used to enter the Mobile Lab or to go on an EVA. The six large tanks contain the liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen needed for the astronauts survival. To the right of the tanks is a drill used to search of water, which is also key to the astronauts survival.
Key features of this design include:
The modular design allows for easy expansion in multiple configurations;
The entire base is assembled remotely by the Mobile Lab's robotic arms without the need to any human intervention. This allows the astronauts to focus on scientific research and exploration of Mars;
The Mobile Lab, with five days of life support, can be used for long range exploration of the Martian surface;
The solar panels have no moving parts which makes them less likely to fail due to the rigours of space travel and the Martian environment.
The base was named MARS Base One as this is the short form of its full name: Martian Amalgamated Research Station Base One.
