Magazine Gateway is an early 15th century stone three storey rectangular gatehouse, founded by Henry, earl of Leicester. The large vehicular and smaller pedestrian archways, were the main entrance into the 14th century, Newarke enclosure of Leicester Castle. The exterior, with its rectangular windows, domed octagonal stair turret and bertizans on the angles of the parapet, were heavily restored in the 19th century. Sadly it now stands marooned, in the middle of a busy ring road. On the 21st of August 1485, King Richard III, rode out of the gatehouse, to fight in what became known as the Battle of Bosworth. 5 miles north-west is Groby Castle and 9 miles south-east is Kibworth Harcourt Castle. #httpwwwcastleuknet
