it was a cold wet morning on January the 7th 1998. Macamor Airlines was in the second year of operation. On the morning of the 7th the Great Ice Storm of 98 was still in full swing. Forecasts out of the Brickton Airfeild that day showed the Portland Jetport in the clear. Macamor Flight 18, one of 14 Boeing 737-300's was delayed an hour due to icing fog from Brickton Airfield. After being deiced twice and reassuring all 52 passengers on board they would make it to Portland, flight 18 departed. The plane climbed to FL310 (31000 Feet) which was a high altitude for the route but the flight had to get above clouds. The flight was smooth, everyone on board was laughing and having a great time. About 15 til arrival, flight 18 ran into a massive cell that was dropping freezing rain and gusting winds in excess of 80 mph. The plane took on too much ice all at once. The de-iceing systems failed and the pitots froze over. The plane struggled to maintain airspeed. Then about 5 miles off the coast of Portland Flight 18 rolled over and plummeted into the icy waters of the gulf of Maine. She took all 57 down to the bottom of the Gulf. The airline suffered from the crash, until Decknar Airlines came along and funded Macamor and made them a regional operator. The fuselage of flight 18 was never recovered nor any bodies. The search for Flight 18 has baffled many searchers for years and will for years to come. May the 52 people on board, and 5 crew members rest in piece. 2013 Boeingfan727 #Boeing_737300 #Flight_18 #Macamor_Air
