The M16 Rifle was a development of the AR15 rifle designed by Eugene Stoner in the 1950's and 60's. The M16 replaced the M14 rifle in U.S. military service in 1970. There were four main variants of the M16. The M16A1 was the first standard issue version, with a triangular forward handguard and fixed carrying handle. The M16A2 was developed to address problems with the M16A1. The M16A2 featured a symmetrical forward handguard and a three-round burst mode. The M16A3 was developed as a fully automatic version of the M16A2, and lastly, the M16A4 was developed with multiple mounting rails on the forward handguard and upper receiver. The M4 Carbine was later developed as a shorter version of the M16A2 and M16A4. All M16 and M4 variants are chambered in the 5.56 NATO round, with civilian versions being chambered in the nearly identical .223 Remington round. #223 #223_remington #556 #556_nato #assault_rifle #bayonet #box #carbine #carrying_handle #ejection_port #ejection_port_cover #eugene_stoner #fixed_stock #flash_hider #forward_assist #hinge #m16 #m16a1 #m16a2 #m16a3 #m16a4 #m4 #magazine #magazine_catch #rifle #sights #solid_stock #stock #united_states #us #usa #vietnam #vietnam_era #vietnam_war
