The low head lightstation was the 2nd lightstation to be established in Tasmania and the 3rd in Australia. Made from rubble from the surrounding area, it stands at a height of 19 meters. After the sinking of the Hebe and varios other ships in the river's mouth, it was finaly decided that a lighthouse was to be built. The original convict built lighthouse was poorly constructed and later collapsed to be replaced by a newer one, later in the 1800s. A large red pand was then painted on the side of the lighthouse so that it could be used by day.
