The original Lillian C. Schmitt Elementary School, including a kindergarten and twelve classrooms, is a natural blend of brick, glass and wood. The school, named for Miss Lillian Schmitt (1891-1959)an elementary teacher in local schools for 43 years, was the first in a series of new schools named in honor of local educators and was the first building in the Cummins Engine Foundation architectural program. Each room has a peaked roofline, making an interesting zigzag exterior silouette,with ten classrooms opening directly onto planned playground areas. In the center of the building, the original large, hexagonalmulti-purpose room with a high seiling could be enlarged by opening folding doors into the main corridor or into the cafeteria. #Columbus #Elementary #Harry #Indiana #Schmitt #School #Weese
