This is a light tight sample enclosure that I designed and 3D printed for keeping background light out from coupling into a microscope. The design is just a box. It took me longer to get the data here that shows how well it works than it did to design it.
Knocking out background room light is particularly a problem with non descanned laser scanning light microscopy systems. You can see how well this simple enclosure worked at shielding the detectors from background room light coupling through the microscope objective in the included images.
The microscope this is sitting on is a Olympus IX71.
The nice part about 3D printing the box vs. making it from hand is that it is easily made light tight. This box is small enough to on a 200mmx200mm bed.
I printed it in black ABS.
