This is to space out short stock for turning or facing operations in a 3-jaw lathe chuck. It flexes over the jaws to take up 3/4" of space. There is a center hole which could be threaded for a stud/bolt to further space stock outward if needed and 3 holes for set screws for finer adjustment if needed for leveling (Magnets could be pressed into these to hold it to the body of the chuck).
The center of this naturally takes up space so the minimum grip diameter possible is about 5/8" diameter. This is sized to fit jaws which are 3/4" wide and designed to flex and grip lightly. On a chuck with narrower jaws (I have tried it on a 5" chuck that had about 5/8" wide jaws) this is loose but does not rattle excessively at speed with a part against it.
This shape is rather bizarre when viewed out of context but it works quite well on a 6" 3-jaw Chuck.
