This is a project I embarked on in an attempt to make business cards to hand out to potential employers (I'm a student).
I wanted something different. But more than that, I wanted something that people wouldn't throw away immediately. After pondering a while I thought of how I often lean my phone against a book or something to keep it upright, and thought this could not only be made better but could be made on the sort of scale I was after.
I stumbled on the use of living hinges for phone stands. I tried this briefly but quickly saw that at a credit card size this was unrealistic. After thinking further I realised that just by using a pencil -something almost everyone has at a desk, a flat piece of wood could be given depth, and would work to prop up a phone. I have several (probably over 100!) pencils from Ikea which are about half the length of normal pencils, or in other words just wider than most smartphones.
I designed this stand with these pencils in mind and have found that the stand is incredibly effective. However, the Ikea pencils I used happen to be a fraction smaller than ALL other pencils I can find, so essentially the hole is an odd size.
The DWG files attached are from Autocad, and the CDR is CorelDraw. I have tried laser cutting into 3mm ply and 3mm perspex (clear acrylic). Both work very well. The drawings each have two stands together for cutting - both sides of the stand.
I hope you all have as much fun making them as I did!
