I used 2.66mm plywood. I buy 4'x8' sheets of it at home depot and cut it into laser-friendly pieces. I believe it is called door skin.
It is sized to use a 20mm diameter dowel, but it can accept smaller sizes as well.
With my K-40 laser, I shoot it with 50% power at 8mm/sec.
