From 1875 a whole new district was planned ('t Zuid), as part of the nineteenth-century city expansion. It was decided to build a museum in the centre of this district to replace the old Academy museum. The museum has been build in 1883-1890 under the leadership of two architects: Jan Jacob Winders and Frans Van Dijk. The style of the building is eclectic: a classical façade with six Corinthian pillars, side walls with windows that have to lighten the lower rooms for sculptures and graphic art, and a rear wall in Flemish Renaissance style. The entire building was decorated with many sculptures depicting art disciplines and periods, and practitioners of art. Inside, the collection had to be housed on the upper floor with the Rubens room as the centre. Since 1890 the ground floor was extended by covering the four large inner courtyards, and a whole series of changes was carried out to the building's interior fixtures and fittings. #Antwerp #Antwerpen #Belgie #Belgium #België #eclectic #eclectisch #Frans_Van_Dijk #Jan_Jacob_Winders #museum #pillars #Rubens #zuilen
