The Kansas City Convention Center is now home to the one of the 10 largest convention center ballrooms in the nation. The new 46,450-square-foot grand ballroom/multipurpose space officially opened this spring. The ballroom was the center of a 135,000-square-foot expansion of the convention center. There are more than $4.5 billion in developments taking place across the downtown convention district. The grand ballroom is the first of these developments to come online. Together with the $300 million Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and the Sprint Center arena, the new area will create a complex for conventioneers and arts patrons. The new multipurpose complex, which features 35,000 square-foot of pre-function space, is equipped to host events for 6,000 people. The previous 23,900 square-foot ballroom remains in place for smaller events. Included in the expansion are 1,300 parking spaces and new kitchen facilities. The company that designed the ballroom, HNTB Architecture, created a water theme for the ballroom, paying tribute to Kansas City’s birth on the nexus of the Kansas and Missouri rivers and Kansas City’s fountains. Many of the intricate design elements and building materials use state-of-the-art technology to accomplish the innovative water theme. In addition to the new and existing ballroom space, the Kansas City Convention Center is also home to 389,000 square- feet of exhibit space and 98,000 square-feet of meeting space. #architecture #ballroom #Bartle #center #convention #downtown #hntb #kansas_city
