Inveresk was the site for Launceston's main railway terminus with the majority of all rail traffic entering the site via the Black Bridge over the North Esk River, the other rail yard located opposite the Gasworks on Willis Street, was considerably smaller and was later demolished. Located just within the levee barrier, barely meters from the Black Bridge, this small timber clad building mounted upon a concrete slab was built in 1875 and modified in 1889. The building is located with clear views of the railway where it once branched into an array of goods sheds. A large amount of the original equipment is still inside including the Signal Masters teapot on the stove attached to the chimney. A small interpretive panel like those seen in front of all the rail yard buildings gives an in site into the working life of the people who ran this essential building. The Signal Box is the sole remaining building with direct involvement in the operating of trains on the site, the rest were demolished in the late 1900s along with the goods sheds to make way for the noticeable circular parking lot/parkland that now stands in front of the original engine shops and carriage works.
