The IBM 1710 Data Processing System was a process control computer system introduced in March 1961, specially designed for controlling industrial processes in real time, such as petroleum refining, chemical processing, electric utility, and steel production. It used a modified IBM 1620 Model 1 or 2 Computer connected to specialized I/O devices to translate remote electrical instrument readings into language understood by the computer to achieve real-time process control. This model represents an IBM 1710 system along with all its’ various possible system peripherals, including both 1620 Model 1 and 2 Consoles (for comparison), 1711 Data Converter, IBM 1712 Multiplexor / Terminal Unit, and IBM 1717 Output Printer, together with the combination IBM 1621 / 1624 Paper Tape reader / punch, IBM 1622 Card-Punch unit, and the IBM 1311 Model 3 Disk Storage Drive, with both the IBM 1623 (Model 1) or 1625 (Model 2) Expanded Core Storage memory (for comparison).
