'Hidden' Wheels - Conservation of Angular Momentum Lab
In this project/physics lesson, students will be able to test the differences in angular momentum of two different disks of which have differing placements of masses. By testing the wheels of different angular velocities/momenta, students can develop conceptual and experimental knowledge about the ways in which differences in mass placement between the wheels of the same volumes can affect the speed at which it rotates down a ramp - thereby affecting the momentum/moment of inertia.
In thinking about introductory demonstrations to introduce new units of study, this project could be integrated into a unit about circular motion, angular momentum, as well as potential energy. In addition, it can be used as a lab activity in classes such as AP Physics I.
