UPDATE 2018-02-01: I got tired of clipping and reinstalling zip ties, so I designed two different locking parts. The TPU one is for when you're using an HE280 with the fan shrouds above it. TPU is flexible enough for you to scoot it around the fan shrouds and on to the clip. The other on is for effectors that do not have the high fan shrouds. You can print that one out of PLA or whatever. Either one just slips over the clip once connected and prevents it from coming loose.
UPDATE 2017-05-08: So, has anyone else made one? There have been like 30 downloads and I'm curious how it's working for you. If you print this and use it, please leave a comment. :) Thanks!
If you have an HE280 hot end on your Rostock, you may have noticed that the wire whip plug does not have any retention mechanism. On two occasions I had the hotend get disconnected from the printer. Once it resulted in a thermal runaway due to the fact that the heater stayed connected while the thermister was disconnected. On the other occasion, the plug came loose during a z-probe resulting in the hotend being driven into the bed until I hit the red button.
These incidents lead me to consider methods to prevent it. This replacement cover and retention clip for your HE280 will allow you to ensure that your hotend stays plugged in.
I have printed and tested both of these objects on my printer and they perform as designed. The heat shrink on the wire whip does impede the clip slightly, so you have to squeeze the clip to get it to engage. Although I think that the clip works adequately, I have added a zip tie around the clip as a failsafe.
The HE280 is stock on the Rostock Max V3 and can be added to any Rostock Max as an upgrade.
UPDATE: I realized that I uploaded an old cover file without enough clearance to insert the clip. v2 fixes this, but if you already printed it, no fear, you can modify it with a razor blade or file. I'm actually running v1 on my printer with no issues.
