Hartwell Tavern was originally built in 1732 on the main road, 'The Bay Road,' as a home for newlyweds Ephraim and Elizabeth Hartwell, surrounded by 18 acres of land. The couple raised 9 children, by which time Ephraim applied for and received a license to open part of their home as an inn. Three of the Hartwells' sons were in the Lincoln Minute Man Company. On the night of April 18th, 1775, Ephraim was awakened by Dr. Samuel Prescott of Concord, who had just escaped an advance guard of British regulars by horseback, while Paul Revere & William Dawes were captured. Ephraim sent his black slave Violet down the road to awaken Samuel Hartwell next door. By the time the Regulars marched past the Hartwell Tavern on their way to Concord, the Lincoln Minute Men had all been warned in time and arrived at the North Bridge in wait. The house continued to be a residence until it was purchased in 1967 by the National Park Service.
