Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat Fighter of Fighting Squadron Three (VF-3) On 4 June 1942, in the Battle of Midway, this plane was flown by Lieutenant Commander John S. Thach, VF-3's Commanding Officer, during the afternoon combat air patrol defending USS Yorktown (CV- 5), wherein Thach probably shot down Lieutenant Joichi Tomonaga, leader of the attacking Japanese torpedo planes. Thach developed the 'Thach Weave' as a technique to beat the more maneuverable and faster A6m 'Zero', a technique that still proves efficient in today's jet fighters. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Thach ) The F4F entered service late in 1940, with both the U.S. and British Fleet Air Arm and was the primary carrier born fighter through 1943. She and her sister, the FM-2 (improved wildcats built by General Motors) served through the end of the war on smaller escort carriers. She served on every front, both land based and carrier versions.
