Transco's Gas Holder Station (in the past known as Gasometer). Watlington Road, Cowley, Oxford, UK. Gas Holders were first build and used at the end of the 19th century when each town, village and city were supplied gas by regional gas companies (gas levels needed to be managed locally). With the advent of nationalisation and access to the piped 'north sea' gas becoming widespread, the gas holders have almost disappeared (England). This type of Gas Holder (Telescoping) expand and contract (vertically) depending on the amount of gas stored inside. Unlike the earlier designs this type of gas holder doesn’t have an external frame to guide the expanding and contracting movements of the structure, It is guided by spiral guides attached of the outside walls of the gas holder. This results in the individual section rotating when moving. The design uses water to keep the sections of the structure air tight, plus to keep the gas at a certain pressure level. The design of the gas holder stops air from sharing the space with the gas, this prevents the gas combusting/exploding (if a hole was to form and a flame presented to it, the gas will simply burn a yellow flame). The last gas holders to be build in the UK was c1986. #Cowley #Gas #Gas_holder #Oxford #Rusty #Station #Tall
