The flag of Nigeria was designed in 1959 and officially hoisted for the first time on 1 October 1960. It is a simple flag composed of three vertical bands of equal dimensions, white the central one and green the two side ones. The two green stripes represent the country's forests and abundance of agriculture, while the central white symbolizes peace. The flag is based on a design by an Ibadan student, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, winner of the competition announced by the Nigerian government in 1959, one year before full independence. The judges subsequently removed from the central band the symbol of the red sun inserted in the original design. #flag #Nigeria #Africa
