Flag of Malta

The flag of Malta is made up of two vertical bands of equal size in white (side of the flagpole) and red. In the upper left canton there is a Cross of King George, bordered in red, 1] an award conferred by King George VI on the entire Maltese population for his exceptional courage and valor during the Second World War. The flag has been in use since September 21, 1964, the island's independence day from the United Kingdom. Before that date, being a British possession, Malta, it used a Blue Ensign flag with the coat of arms of Malta on the white disc to the right of the door.
