The rod holder is constructed with wood, leather, and metal where necessary.

This rod holder can be considered universal because it has a diameter of 1½ inches—which is arguably large enough for most fishing rods—and the diameter is adjustable by means of a leather belt that is wrapped around the holder.

Both the leather of the strap and the wood are treated to resists water. The belt is looped around an anchor on the holder on one end, wraps around the top (applying pressure on the upper tongue of the holder which in turn grips the fishing rod tightly to prevent it from sliding out in rough conditions) and locks onto a protruding peg on the other side of the holder. The belt will have several notches in it, in order to be tightened to a variety of different lengths for rods of different diameter.

The locking mechanism that latches onto the canoe is designed to be easily put in place and quickly removable. The arm is also designed to be quickly and easily adjustable for different fishing rod angles.
