As I stared to accumulate more filament storage became an issue. I wanted an easy way to organize filament and keep it dry since some filament is hydroscopic (absorbs water).
The design criteria:
• K.I.S.S – Keep It Simple Stupid
• Use an existing low-cost airtight container known to work for storing filament in a
vertical position
• Container that would accommodate most 1kg / 2.2 lbs.or smaller spools of
filament
• Utilize reusable silica gel packets to control moisture inside the container
• User a low-cost temperature / hygrometer to monitor the environmental conditions
inside the container
• Did not want to have to take the filament container off the shelf nor open the
container to check:
o Humidity / Temperature levels
o Insect silica gel indicators
o Know what filament was in the container
Based on this criterion, I came up with the following storage insert which incorporates elements from other storage solutions I have see people design. The parts needed for this project and descriptions from Amazon so you can find them:
• Veanic Mini Digital Electronic Temperature Humidity Gauge LCD Display for
Humidors, Greenhouse, Garden, Cellar, Fridge – This is a panel mount gauge that
can be purchased for around at Amazon or eBay. See
dimensions in attached picture
• Chef’s Path Cereal Containers (135.2oz) - Airtight Food Storage Containers, Kitchen
& Pantry Organization. This is what I used, but you can use this insert in any
container that has a 65mm wide flat bottom.
• Wisedry 10 Gram Silica Gel Packets Reactivated by Microwave - Color Indicating Air
Dryer Bags for Moisture Removal. These packets have beads that turn from yellow to
green as they absorb moisture. When they turn green it is time to “recharge” them so
they can be reused. 10g packets are rated to keep 5.6 liters / 1.5 gallons dry. The
container listed about is 4 liters / 1.05 gallons so you have some headroom. You can
use any silica gel packer you want as long it is around 50mm / 2.3 inches wide.
• Info sticker off the side of your filament container to keep track of what is in the
container.
