Overground represents studio space for Sidney Nolan, the glass material corresponding with the reflection of nature in his artworks. The key word used here is 'icon' derived from his iconic representations of Ned Kelly through oil paintings. Stairs for icon are shaped around the face of the structure, and are thus an integral part of the facade of the 'icon' studio space.The stairs are deigned to offer very scenic views of landscape, and thus provide an inspirational experience. They lead onto a platform which has an elevator to the gallery space. The gallery space is constructed mainly of glass and has an origami feel to it and therefore appears very fragile and yet at the same time monumental. The shape like icon is geometric though very linear, it is also open. Exiting from the front of the gallery lead to stairs to the underground studio space of Patricia Piccinni. These stairs are very heavy, and are made up of unique 'j-shaped' pieces that connect together. Without anything to hold on to as you walk down a sense of fear and insecurity is instilled. This emotion I feel reflects my own reaction to Piccinini's artworks/sculptures. The space that the stairs lead into is very natural and organic like Piccinini's creatures and the bareness of the walls in this space leaves it feeling as real as possible. The cave-like space seems like one that Piccinini’s creatures would inhabit and is therefore an ideal place to create them. #2008 #ARCH1101 #EXP1 #Synthia_Rahman
